I can see how this class may be dangerous for me right now during quarantine. I have been relying heavily on social media in my personal life to stay connected to friends, colleagues, and family. I have been using it even more than normal and now I have professional accounts piling up for this class.
I find that I am spending a significant amount of time on social media every day for my personal life and class, and then add on to that- I am enjoying blogging more than I expected.
My main reflection for this week is that I need to be careful with the amount of time that I spend on each social media platform and crafting witty blog posts because this is just a small fraction of my job duties right now. Plus, we are still in a pandemic and I need some time for self-care, as we all do.
I am also very intrigued to keep exploring how differently each generation approaches and uses technology. My research and reflection this week has made me realize that even though I think I am this hip, young teacher, I actually have a very different relationship with technology than my students. And that gap will only continue to widen so it is important for me to continue to adapt my teaching strategies and view technology from my student's perspective.
Hopefully next week I can find a groove, a routine to stick to, and limit the time spent on social media just "exploring" and enjoying, and my new book Born Digital should arrive on Tuesday, so I will spend some "me time" reading that!

Your comment about being a "hip, young teacher" made me smile. I don't pretend to be young, but I do think it is important to be knowledgeable with technology in order to have credibility with teens. I haven't decided how I feel about the "digital native." I get the concept, but the term native bothers me a little. They weren't born with the knowledge to navigate the digital world. They have simply had the chance to use it. I still have high school students who prefer a paper/pencil planner or book. Does that mean they are not a digital native?
ReplyDelete"I am enjoying blogging more than I expected." -- made me smile. I'm so happy to be blogging again, and I wish I had more time for it. I really do enjoy writing and interacting in this format.
ReplyDeleteI have definitely had an increase of social media use also (Facebook specifically) during the pandemic. And today I finally created an Instagram and before I knew it, I had been on there for 2 hours looking, following and to be honest, trying to figure it out. I'm going to have to be careful or I'll be up until midnight every night browsing.
